What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing. I know, it’s a mouthful! EMDR is a special type of therapy that is focused on breaking down negative thoughts about life and negative beliefs about yourself, that stem from traumatic or disturbing memories. When we go through something traumatic or disturbing, our brain often stores the memory of the stressful incident, in an unhelpful way, that impacts us in our everyday life. Often times we don’t even realize it, but we can see the effects in our stress responses, self esteem, fear, anxiety, depression, etc.
Using EMDR, I help you “reprocess” the negative memories and thinking, by taking the emotional charge out of the experience of a specific memory. The newly processed memories then impact you less negatively, feeling a new sense of overcoming how the memory once deeply affected you. The meaning of a once painful event, is transformed into a different, more helpful perspective.
EMDR is pretty different than traditional talk therapy, because there involves a specific protocol and type of questions I’ll ask. You also won’t have to re-live the memory by telling me the details, if you don’t want to. It also involves using special tools to get the different parts of your brain activated. Because EMDR works directly with your brain functions, it has been found to be very effective with healing and relief for many people.
